View Full Version : How Best to Rotate a Male Between Girls

My Retics have begun to mate (finally...has it been 5 years already?). But I don't have a set plan on rotation (i.e. how long in each cage before moving him on or exactly when to rotate the male around). Of course this assumes the other two females stop feeding soon, and about the same time...otherwise it'll just be one after another as they stop feeding.

I've caught this one breeding at least 2 times, spanning several weeks...

...right now the other 2 females (who are bigger) are still eating. I suspect Vixen will stop soon, but I don't know about the Tiger Het (just ate 22lbs). If they both stop soon...what should the rotation schedule look like?

I'll wait for Andy to respond before I just repeat what he has told me... but the off feed thing is not always a definite, throw the male in with the other females and see what they do. It can't hurt.

If you put the other females in the cage with the female that is breeding, they will likely go off food pretty quick. If you start introducing the male to them, they might go off just by smelling each other on him. I personally wouldn't wait for them, I would get the male in with them and get the females smelling each other, but that's me.

We've tried a few different schedules and I don't think it matters. We had one albino male successfully breed 3 females last season. We moved him every 2 days for the 1st week or so as long as he hadn't actively bred that day, which if he had then we gave him another day with that female. After a week or 2 like that, we left him with each girl for 3 or 4 days.

As I said on the BCF, thanks for the info...it helps.

One thing to consider as well Randy is if he breeds you can move him right away. He probably wont do anything again for a few days with that girl. Usually with retics your only looking at a few copulations, not the big numbers you get from boas and balls.

The two to three day scedule is usually a good way to go. If he starts slowing down, feed him...

As I stated, my Tiger Het and other adult female "Vixen" were still looking for food. So after getting everyone’s advice, I opted to place another female (Vixen) in with the girl that had already bred a few times and the male (so 3 in one cage). This was in the hopes of getting Vixen to start thinking of something other than food. Well it's been about 5 days now and Vixen was still "begging" for food when I approached the cage front last night.

But this morning…

...we'll move Mercedes out to her own enclosure in the next couple days, leaving the boy and Vixen alone. Interestng thing - the male has been resting totally under Mercedes coils. I can't even see him, I've even wondered if he was still alive in there...really :)
