Could someone list the necessary parts for construction of one of those c02 killing jars thanks

i use a cardboard box, a lid (not always - depends on how high the box is), dry ice, a spill proof temperature resistant container, and water.

carbon dioxide is denser than air - so it sinks, and displaces oxygen. this sufficates the critter in the chamber.... you really dont need any fancy rubber seals or hoses. just let the gas do its job and it will work like a charm!

so in summery:

i get a box

put the animal in the box

put the spill proof container filled with water and a piece of dry ice inside the water...

...put on some classical music.

i like dry ice cuz you can see the gas as it sublimates, its invisiable coming from a cartridge.

you can do the same thing with a CO2 cartridge... just remember all you need is any old box (with or without lid, and no holes) that will trap the carbon dioxide.

It's not CO2 gas you are seeing but frozen water vapor. Also, don't count on CO2 sinking to the bottom of an OPEN container due to density...the difference is VERY slight and any air current will disturb the partioning.

Here are some pics of a chamber that a Nerd forum member built:

here is some really interesting information on permissive hypercapnea... or CO2 poisoning.

as you will read storing CO2 in any form is very dangerous.

this article expains how 1000's of people died in africa from CO2 poisoning...

http://perso.wanadoo.fr/mhalb/nyos/nyos.htm

this is a weird one too...

http://mdchoice.com/emed/main.asp?template=0&page=detail&type=6&id=927

so as you can see that you really dont need an air tight container to get your results... as long as the concentration of CO2 has accumulated high enough to displace normal air it will kill anything that breaths oxygen.

just food for thought... :)

I use my chamber outside. And put a small hole in the lid to make it not "too" air-tight. I will go with what Hennek has to say on this matter as he helped me very much in creating my gas chamber. Which has worked perfectly many times and I am not harmed. Thanks again H. :)

Boys, the point of using CO2 in a container to kill a rat is to speed up the process of elimination of oxygen so the rat can't breathe anymore, and suffocates to death. As you exhale, you put out CO2. The only way that CO2 is dangerous is that if you were locked in an airtight room, you would run out of oxygen and die from asphyxiation. The same reason why the sailors on the Kursk died, those who didn't die as a result of the explosion.

Carbon monoxide is a product of combustion, and has poisonous effects on the brain. It usually puts people into a stupor or delirium, and then they die depending on concentration. CO damages the path of blood oxygenation, which starts at the lungs, and therefore it reduces blood oxygenation to the brain, inducing sleep, and eventual brain, organ and tissue death.
