My current favorite bands are the ones nobody else has heard of.

http://www.murderbydeath.com Not too many bands use cello, guitar, piano, drums. They are almost always on tour....and I understand they breathe fire at shows...I've only been able to see them live once, and they couldn't firebreathe in the building we were in.

http://www.killhannah.com Very popular around the chicago area, and slowly going mainstream. They're great. Their most popular song is "kennedy".

I listen to a lot of stuff though, I have a huge amount of music on my computer.

i think murder by death is coming around to tri-state area-villanova to be exact, sometime in feb. Until moral improves is a great song. They r good. Im caught up right now with EMO and alternative-AFI, the sounds, the yeah, yeah, yeahs, but i always tune back to all time faves-moody blues, scorpions, rush, red hots, list is to long.

I'm looking California, but feeling Minnesota.-Sound Garden

Of the bands people have listed, my favorite band names so far are "Dying Fetus" and "Nuclear Rabbit." I've never heard their music, but if it's as good as their names...

I'm a Mr. Bungle/Mike Patton fan, plus mostly old school: Pink Floyd, Cream, Black Sabbath, etc..

Yes... "Dying Fetus" is an AWESOME band name.

Dying Fetus is one of those bands where the singer sounds like a dog farting on a snare drum, metal just for the sake of being metal... Not good in my opinion... Nuclear Rabbit is by far one of the greatest yet least known bands... If you like Patton (All of, not Faith No More exclusively) you'll probably like them... Their bass player has an independent 9 string custom bass, the rest of the band is just as weird and amazing... One of the other bands I listed, "Element Of Surprise", was a side project, it was a more radio friendly type of band... He still played his 9 string bass, and as far as radio bands go, they were one of the best yet also went unnoticed... Hope you enjoy Nuclear Rabbit if you decide to check em out... www.nuclearrabbit.com

Just because you cant hear it doesnt mean its bad. Them bands are real out there doing it because they love doing it, there all over the place in a van, with a little cash in there pocket, not for a pay check or an mtv spot.

Let's see..
In Flames
Lamb of God
At the Gates (Slaughter of the Soul!!!)
Soilwork
Slayer
Megadeth (pre-Countdown)
Arch Enemy
Opeth
The Black Dahlia Murder (little too unorganized but decent...)
Sepultura (pre-Roots)
Mastodon

Now when I need a little change of pace...
Rush, Yes, Zeppelin, Apocalyptica (Inquisition Symphony is godly!), Dream Theater, Clapton, Eagles even a little 10,000 Maniacs and Sarah McLachlan from time to time...

All depends on the mood I am in...if I want angry (sitting in bumper to bumper traffic) then I have my choices...if I need something a little more soothing and musical then I have my choices....in either case it MUST be LOUD... with no distortion of course!

Does Mtv still exist? Word of mouth about bands and music is how it gets done. Everybody likes what they like. Forums pass the word on and eventually no-one is living out of a van, and they are not so broke, and mtv is still kissing Britney's cute a-s-s! Hey gotta luv Bit  Trip back to the 80's and mtvs Headbangers Ball, thats as close as they got, or am I the only one that stayed up past my bedtime for that :?:

I gotta admit I play Slipknot in the car a lot - my 5 year old son always asks for rocking music and swith the rubbish off on the radio.

Cradle of Filth's new CD is pretty good - didn't like it the first couple of plays but it is growing on me - weird shit though.

Cradle has this one song lustmord that I really dig..I like there other stuff too...some of it is out there....the cover of hallow be thy name(maiden) is cool...I like the part where he says MuthaFucka.....

So much good stuff but some of the new stuff is just plain LAME!!! Recycled crap!!!

I am stuck on Damage plans song Pride...

Losing Dime bag is such a bummer!!! I met him, very, very ncie guy...and small!!

Head bangers ball was almost good.....they would play some great stuff and then they would just kill you with a few terrible songs!!!!

Most of the bands you named are all new metal crap. The music I listed has a lot more talent the bands you named, I love how people say Death Metal is crap it sounds like I guy burping and someone beating on a drum as fast as he can. Just because you cant hear it doesnt mean its bad. Them bands are real out there doing it because they love doing it, there all over the place in a van, with a little cash in there pocket, not for a pay check or an mtv spot.

First off, to address the "New Metal" issue... Of the bands I listed, the only ones that are actually in that "genre" would be Deftones and KoRn... Who, if you remember, pioneered the "genre"... I was into KoRn when they were still being labeled "Thrash"... Furthermore, the "New Metal" fad and even worse the fad of hating "New Metal" has made many a close minded person overlook extremely good bands... Dry Kill Logic is a prime example, the way the singer screams is truly a talented screaming technique, not a back of the throat Macho Man Randy Savage gurgle...

Secondly, "just because you can't hear it" you say... You have no idea of my depth and understanding of music... I understand "Death Metal" and "Black Metal", however most of those bands are talentless morons singing about bullshit, without any form of melody or flow... There are many a Death Metal band that are amazing, and many a Black Metal band that are Godlike... Of the bands you listed (as well as the genre as a whole) there are only a few I really like, and typically only the music is up to par... The singers are almost always shit and that is what turns me off to listening to those genres more... You can't listen to an amazing mind blowing drummer with the sickest guitarists when there's some f--ked up poop singing about a female with a mullet pissing in the woods standing up in a demonic Hulk Hogan voice...

About the MTV bullshit... How can you question someone's integrity because they're good enough to have a mass audience? Every single one of the bands I listed are doing what they do for love of the music first and foremost...

So much good stuff but some of the new stuff is just plain LAME!!! Recycled crap!!!

Gotta import stuff from Europe man... They're still doing Metal right over there... There's some good American Metal around though... Most goes under the radar... Lamb Of God is doing a good job keeping our name alive though...

Pantera is just the perfect METAL...

Indeed Kevin, indeed...

My opinion, mtv is bullshit. Yeah, all these bands that r listed probably started out or still r, living in a van with a little cash in there pocket for their love of their music. If they r good enough, and they get a mass audience f-in fantastic for them. What im asking is, u guys r listing death and black metal music because your their mass audience. its not f-in mtv. gotta go to deathmetal.com or blackmetal.com or WORD OF MOUTH to be a part of it. Im spoiled with my computer, i dont need mtv. In fact, i didn't realize nerd's forum had such a mass audience for metal. Maybe Nerd should do tv-MTV....METAL TV!!!!!!! FRickin whatever! I gotta admit, Enrico Iglesais is F-in cute

Lets see the crap you put down.... Cynder (isnt this that ozzfest show band who sucked like the rest of them bands.) dry kill logic ( real hard guys) skindred, motograter ( crapy band who paints them selves up) mindless self indulgence (you say death metal sings about crap these guys sing about how they gave girls stds. thats real good writing.) hed pe. (im not even going to say anything they speak for them selves) kill switch engage (hot topic hardcore) along with shadow fall. mudvayne (has no talent... face painting and mask wearing playing and rocking out like robots isnt talent) most of the other bands ive never heard. you say stuff about Dying Fetus, and what death metal writs about and Dying Fetus writes about the war and real life things... same with Suffocation, and a lot of other Death Metal band... Check out HatePlow and read the lyrics. But Death Metal is about how they play not what they sing about. What drummer in any of the bands you named is better then Richard Christe (Death, Iced Earth) Kevin Talley (Dying Fetus, Misery Index), or the drummer from Nile, name a bassiest thats better then Alex Webster from Corpse, or has better leads then Eric from Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal. The fact is you listen to new metal crap and I was cool with that till you had to make your comment about Dying Fetus. No one asked your opion.[/list]

I'm not even taking this any further... If you can even question the talent of Mudvayne you aren't worth continuing and "argument" with... I wasn't trying to argue, I was stating MY opinion... I also said the music of those bands is good... I gave respect where it is due... Notice you NEVER once said a singer was good... Bands can't just be good music... Period.

I forget so many band that I love....I like all sorts of music...

I love that Evanescence song bring me to LIFE..

SHe is just awesome!!!! Great song..

I love HEAVY HEAVY stuff....

I love Coroner...I like some cannibal corpse, Nile....that stuff...the singing soes get old for me....I focus on the players!!! I am a guitar freak and listen hard to what is going on...

Korn was never really thrash..they seem to plink more than anything.... they have a great knack for melodys and hooks....

I enjoyed them before it was the fad.... I remember Tool's "Sober"...the video..I was like this is great..Guns and roses were gods at a time for straight rock and roll...all of the old stuff...Zep and all is great..

Priest, Maiden sooo much.... good stuff.....

Whenever I listen to those types of bands (one of my current favorites is Mastodon) I typically listen to the drums, most of the stuff they do on guitar is mind blowing... Maybe it's because I'm a singer and that style doesn't really interest me... I'd LOVE to have a band like that playing for me, I just wouldn't sing like that...

I would agree that KoRn was never really thrash, I said when they were still being "labeled" Thrash... When they first came out the media had no genre for them and didn't know what the fuck to call them... Hence the conjuring of the evil "Nu-Metal" "genre"... After they had already started calling them Thrash here and there...

Roses....... I remember being a little dude with a mullet doing that Axl shimmey jig and trying to hold out that entire note at the end of "Don't Cry"... Good times...... Haha...

I have pretty diverse musical tastes. Anyone who's been in my truck and heard Disturbed's "Enemy" segue into Willie Nelson's "Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain" can be my witness. ;)

I don't really listen to country at all, just a few songs that hold memories. For the most part it's the same as the concensus here... ...metal, rock, etc. I also like some indie/college/eclectic stuff.

My absolute favorite band of the moment is Flogging Molly. After 12 years in radio and nearly 4 years of working concerts you really start giving a damn what other people think of your musical tastes. I listen to what I like, period.

For those who don't know I lost a good friend and guitar legend recently. R.I.P. Dime.

For me my music depends on the mood I am in and what i am doing at the time.
I love the blues, especially the more recent electric stuff such as Michael Burks. Listen to alot of Albert Collins, Stevie Ray, Luther Allison,Son Seals and Charlie Musselwhite.Hubert Sumlin, Otis Grand...and countless others! If you want to hear a great guitar oriented blues album check out Showdown by A.Collins,R.Cray and Johnny Copeland.
I also like Metal, mostly old school Anthrax, Megadeath..Iron maiden and the likes..love Pantera and older Metallica.
Still listen to alot of classic rock Black Sabbath...Led zeppelin..Doors and Hendrix..I agree with Kevin I love to crank Dio or Sabbath with Dio when doing chores or cleaning cages especially the Heaven and Hell album.
Lastly I love Zappa and Steve Vai! I like to listen to those guitars..especially Marty Freidmen, Jason Becker, Jeff Beck and Joe Satriani.
And when I am in a mellow mood I like Al Dimeola and alot of Jean Luc Ponty, Alan Holdsworth and Stanley Clarke.
Sorry i did not mean to ramble on it is just that after my children and my animals music plays an important part of my life and my tastes vary I can't see anyone being confined to one style when there is so much great stuff to be heard out there..thanks for listening!!

Ugghhhhhhh..... we have been robbed of A HUGE and AWESOME talent....

That means we never get to hear his new playing ever again..... Emptiness....

No one is going to fill those shoes..... NO ONE!!

I have been stuck on the song "pride" Damageplan big time.....

It is kind of miserable to listen to but the song has this element that keeps me playing it OVER and over again!!

I met him briefly and was at a back stage party with my friends slayer and Pantera was there...they were hanging around(cept phil...he and Tom A were off in a smoking room!)

Pantera was just very basic and one of the guys....I am looking at dime and I am thinking what can I say to this guy that lets him know how incredible he is.... instead I just told him he was a metal god or something and he makes me want to kill my guitar!!! He laughs and was very cool and smiled as if he was modest which it seems he was...

He was just "it"!!!!!

The day that I heard about "a shooting" during a "heavy metal show" I figured it was some underground Bad Luck 13 type of show... When they got the word that it was a Damageplan show my immediate response to Missy was, "Fuck, someone could have shot Dimebag... That would be fucked up..."... I never would have thought that of the people that were shot DIMEBAG would be one of them! The way he treated fans and the love that he brought to this world, you would never in a million years have even considered it to be a possibility... It was a great loss to true Metal, and a great loss to a lot of us musicians, the people who really KNOW how amazing and talented he truly was... The worst part is hearing not too long before the shooting that he had returned to Dean, went to Krank exclusively for amplification, and said he had "found his tone"... The way he spoke of his new stuff, you can only imagine and hope for a rarity disc with maybe some unreleased riffs... Who needs a full song, just give us some good old fashioned Dimebag riffage...

Phil was definitely NOT welcome at the funeral nor the memorial. That said, I still love the hell outta Phil... ...but him being there would have been very bad. I just hope Phil can shake the needle someday. I know he's hurting and part of me wished he could be there. A very small part, though.

After watching that video, I had doubts about whether he is still using or not... If he is off, awesome! However, the one problem I still have with Phil, is the interview that he did for the December Metal Hammer... In the article he blamed Dimebag for Pantera's break up, he also said Dimebag deserves to be beaten severely, in the same article he says "Revenge? Revenge on top of revenge... my life moves in cycles. Beyond cycles. Cycles on top of cycles. I suggest no-one do me wrong. Things don't go so well for them, and I lift not a finger..."... He also said, "I have a devoted following that would do anything for me! Anything that I say. And there's not many people that can say that, that are in my position."... In my opinion if that article had not been published Dimebag would still be rippin' it up...

I tried to keep the list short last time, I figured it's time to add some more bands and maybe change the subject from Dimebag to something less disheartening...

Otep (Hot chic, who can scream better than most guys.), Walls Of Jericho (Another ridiculous chic.), Queensryche, Nightwish, Dimmu Borgir, Coal Chamber (Their third disc was incredible!), Audioslave, Stabbing Westward, PT Grimm and The Dead Puppies, Daniel Lioneye (rock and roll. period.), The Showcase Showdown, Staind, Corrosion Of Conformity, Vision Of Disorder, Soil, Alter Bridge (I knew Creed would be good without that ghey singer), Motley Crue, Cream, Seether, Chimaira, Eighteen Visions, Days Of The New, and I'll leave it at that for now...

Oh, Kevin, and anyone else that lives in New England... Jesse Leach from the old Killswitch Engage (as well as ex-members of Shadows Fall, Overcast, and Medium) started a new band called Seemless... They are RIDICULOUS... I don't think I've heard a better Boston made disc since Staind's Tormented... If you've got a fever, and the only thing that can cure it is more cowbell... Then you definitely have to check them out... Haha, seriously though, their re-released debut comes out tomorrow on Equal Vision records and their record release party is this Saturday at Lucky Dog, I suggest you get Jon and Andy and come rock out with us...

Hells yes on the Ratt and Dokken!! Throw in some "Shout at the Devil" era Crue, The Sister and old G n R and you're screaming my language!!

I hate to pee on your downloads however, with Napster and "free trial" I'm pretty sure they encode the MP3 files so that they can't be converted to WAV format and hence a playable CD. I could be wrong on this, but thats the deal they signed with the nefarious computer company for which I work. Three free months of it, and as soon as you say "No mas", the MP3s are de-activated somehow. To wit, you can only play them on your pc as long as your monthly payment is current. If you can find a way to download these files and convert to WAV, definitely let me know!!!!

We all got free 4 gb MP3 players as a bonus this year and thats how the "Free Naptster Downloads" were explained to me. I hope somebody out there can find a wrinkle and exploit it for you/us in the name of FREE MUSIC!!!!!

regardless of how the mp3's are coded for protection I must ask this question... how can a compressed music format be all that great...???? Sure for some listening on sport headphones it is great but for REAL listening it just doesn't make the grade...something is lost in the compression...mostly upper and lower end.. if you must go with a compressed format check out SHN...not as compressed as MP3 but not a full size WAV... or just make it easier on everyone and buy the CD! I;ve yet to check out Apple's lossless but I am sure it won't be as dynamic as the real deal...
my 2 cents!

Hey, fkdmatt, have you checked out Mastodon yet? They are the most amazing band live. I can't get enough of them.

I'm a big fan of Death metal. My favorites include Dying Fetus, Mortician, Mastodon, Nile, Mortal Decay, Anal Blast, Origin, and Dimmu Borgir. My fiance is the webmaster for Mortal Decay's website. You should check them out. They rock. http://www.mortaldecay.us/ :headbang:

ROFL.... Nice comeback Jon jon. :smt005

mp3 vs real cd's is like apples and oranges. I have a cranking sound system on my computer and spend alot of time sitting here doing paperwork and stuff so its easier for me to have the mp3's on the computer so I dont have to stop and keep switching cds. And also, I get to have a list of songs that I LOVE instead of having 3 songs on a cd that i really like and the rest that I could do without. They both have advantages and disadvantages..... I have a great cd collection as well, but I keep most of them in the car. And as far as sound goes, mp3s do lose a little bite, but is you have a good enough system to play them on, you can compensate.

Yeah, all my music from NAPSTER is on our MP3's. sux, but like Jon T. says-gotta buy the Cd! What realy sux is Justin-my son-makes BMX viseos of him and his friends and we were trying to grab songs but we definetly couldnt link anything to a Dvd format whatsoever. We have a new dvd program on our pc, so were checking out the music formats. Speaking of checking out, I never got into 80s rock like Ratt, Dokken, etc. I rode the Kinks, Yes, Rainbow, Boomtown Rats train back then, but allposters.com has an GREAT FRICKIN poster of all the covers of PINK FLOYDS album covers. If anybody gets the chance check it out. Theyre painted on the backs of naked chicks while there sitting down. To creative.

Sam-
Ask Kev sometime about the origins of the "I've finally found something I love that doesn't fit into a sweaterbox" line...
As for mp3's...next WP show come out to my car and you can hear the difference for yourself...just so I can prepare a cd in mp3...what is napster using as a standard for bit rate? 128? 192? maybe I'll do a little medley of different bit rates...
gothic...when is lamb of god playing the meadows? I'll have to pass on watching the guys in masks...especially if they play the new stuff :smt022 :smt022

Jon Jon, I am not saying mp3 is as good as a cd, I am just saying it works out well for me because I am sitting at the computer alot and can have a song list playing for hours while I work instead of having to change a cd every 30 mins. I honestly think your right about the sound quality, but I do have a kickin sound system on my computer so it does help with making them sound better then off a portable mp3 player. As for napster Sue and Justin are messing around with music for Justins BMX DVD's. In fact Sue has already canceled the napster trial period, so out DL'ing days over :smt013

I will gladly go jam out in your car thou bro.... I am always up for some head pounding bass! Sue and I used to enter crank it up contests back when we were young and cool like you ! :smt019

OVERKILL..... man I forgot about them..I heard some of the newer stuff...very tight and GOOD!!
Is their newest stuff better then mid 90's? Last album I picked up was the third they did for CMC, Every album they did for Atlantic shreds but its seemed to me as though were kind of losing it in the mid 90's and I havnt picked any of their newer ones up

Is Testament still around I havnt heard anything since souls of black, I cant think of the ablum prior to new world order but that one was awesome too. The Lagacy?

Have you heard Megadeths newest totally kicks ass, Awesome guitar work, it pissed me off they remastered everything some were good but man Dave killed Five Magics on RIP, that was one of the best songs on the album, one of the best songs they ever wrote I think and I love the clarity in SFSGSW remaster but they totally killed the impact on into the lungs of hell and set the world afire. Oh well daves releasing a best of album and calling it quits for Deth. Hes still got 3 solo albums to his contract on sanctuary. Speaking of Sanctuary what ever happened to that band? They opened for deth on the SFSGSW tour somehwere around here I still have their CD "into the mirror black" but just kind of fell off the face of the earth after that.

Billy Corbin are you being serious? Hes a talented guy he did wonders for Courtney she doesnt have an ounce of talent. I was never got much into alternative though. I havnt really followed him much so I dont know what else he has done. I only ever heard their radio friendly songs, I dont know much about him.

Oh and I have to ad one more to the list Suicidal, I seen them in 96 when they played some sk8ter club in HI and Mike is one huge freakin guy. Its ashame Rocky isnt with them anymore he gave their mus an eliment very few can capture in metal guitar.

Oh I didnt know you were friends of Dime I am truely sorry, its a shame the fruit loops we have to share this world with.

I am 37, started playing in metal bands in 83 with my first band Savage Death. I've since played in O.L.D., Ripping Corpse, Morpheus Descends, Incantation, Exile and Nokturnel. I have had the honor and pleasure of playing with most of the well known bands of the 90s...like Cannibal Corpse, Deceased, Human Remains, Death, Sinister, Crytopsy, Immolation, and way too many too name. I got to tour with Morbid Angel, Krisiun, Angel Corpse, Vader and Nile and I am sure I am leaving out some other great acts. I sell metal and spikes for a living and this is now why I feel old....seeing many of you have named bands that I ignore becuase much of the nu metal bands are just not appealing to me. This bums me out because it seems metal has strayed from the original formula and is now this huge mainstream industry....ugh. I still sell lots of older metal and must admit sales aint what they used to be. I think I will have to check some of these newer bands out....just to see what they're really about. However if you want to talk metal or snakes and have an appreciation for Thrash, Death and Black Metal catch me on AIM. Tom Stevens

I cant STAND hardcore. It reminds me of some type of plauge. Now everything is something-core. Metal-core, rap-core, radio-core, even EMO-core. What the heck is EMO doing with CORE? I liked it better when you went to a metal show you heard metal bands playing metal songs for Metal kids with a big metal PIT. Now you go and you've got some metal band that no longer writes metal songs but hardcore songs, and there is a pit but its not workng at all becaue the metal kids want to thrash and the hardcore kids want to do what ever it is that they do, which doesnt involve touching anyone and has to involve "personal space". Personal space in a pit? WHen the hell did that happen?

Nope, I like my metal raw and sick. Its not all I listen to, but when I do, I want to hear it for what it is, not deluted by something else.
