Lance Johnson was the kid's name. HE didn't steal the surfboard (which didn't belong to the captain either). The captain stole the surfboard which belonged to the crazy air cav colonel (Robert Duvall character) as the boat was peeling away after being air assaulted (then called air mobile) onto the river. Yes, the crazy air cav colonel sent his copters out with the recorded message up and down the river, but not too far because "You don't think he wants the whole river knowing we stole his surfboard, do you?" LOL The surfboard theft incident should have NEVER been cut from the theatrical version!
