Save your pennies & start with a yellow or red Ackie.

I was gonna say savannah, but ackies are cool too. Maybe a tegu...My fave was an anole I had when I was young. So cool but you can't really hold em cuz they get hurt too easily.

Up to a 4 foot cage... you definitely need to go with one of the dwarf species of monitor, then. Timors are too shy and skittish, but very nice display animals as long as you don't startle them, lol.

Ackies have wonderful personalities, not shy at all. Very good beginner monitor.

I would get a pair of yellow ackies...they only cost around 250 shipped...eventhough they are expensive right now they would save you in the long run...you don't want a sav that will be mean..hungry..and doesn't even want to come out because he is scared of you..

I have a Savannah Monitor that I love to death! I found him at a retile humane society in Colorado. They have all their adoptable animals online too! I had mine shipped (flight to San Francisco) for $135.00 (that included the large dog crate he came in. I have had other monitors in the past...and he has been the best by far! The society will not adopt animals out that are not extremely hand tamed or skittish. I actually have mine that will walk on a leash with a small harness. I feed mine med. to small rats. Two a week to be exact. He is not a gory eater either which is nice. Very hardy pet! But if you are looking for something smaller...my first love was a bearded dragon. He went EVERY where with me! He loved to sit on my dash or middle console in my car in the warm California sun. They are not at ALL skittish and will even eat meal worms right out of your hand. I have not had one yet that doesn't love human attention. Mine now will actually come to me when I have him in the back yard. Wonderful starter pet!!! Hope you find what you are looking for =)
