I would like to get a hook to get my skin seeking evil boy out with in order to try to tame him down. Right now he is two months old but I don't know what hook to get for him. I would also like to be able to use the hook for the Borneos that keep burying in the cypress mulch. One of them is still nippy. Is this a bad idea? I am open to suggestions.

How big is he? I personally dont like the hook method. The way I like taking feisty snakes out is:

1) I put a towel gently over their head

2) I grab them a bit behind their neck so they don't feel uncomfortable (like when you grab them behind the head) but you can still get a good grip on them.

3) Handle them somewhat normal from then being careful they dont strike my face ;)

Good luck

Alex

Hmmm, perhaps I'll give that a go first. I used to have to do that with my Conure because he was so nasty. He died this month though and I still miss that Satan bird!

The Burm is just a 2 month old little guy. He's strike happy and fast as all heck.

i wouldnt grab them behind the head, that usually enrages them further. use gloves if you have to at first and then with some time and gentle consistant handling he should tame down.

I'd pick up a hook from any of the companies that make them.

I prefer the hook method to grabbing the snake as it allows the snake to move around but under control and out of direct striking distance, more so for the lil buggers teeth, that way you and the snake can get to know each other and increase the confidence between you IE:support the tail then the body and before you know it the snake is happily using your hand as a perch.

Plus its allways a good idea to hook train burms, so the earlyer you start them the better .

Ok now what hook to get? I have no idea where to start or what size to buy. I have looked on tongs.com but I sit and stare blankly cuz he's just a 2 month old snake now and won't be this tiny forever. I can take him out now after a display of his and he is quite calm. It's just the getting him out part that is the problem. I'd rather get him used to it early than wait.

you have to handle them a lot to get them used to it. remember right now they see you as a potential predatore. It just takes time and patiants. But don't worry they'll learn, and you will all be happy ;)

I am a little bit biased, but I truely believe in the use of snake hooks. I use a hook with every snake I own, every time I enter their enclosure without food. And, even with my most aggressive rings, I rarely get tagged. I have never been bitten by a burm, (even a baby) since getting used to hooks.

You are never going to get a usefull hook with which you can "pick up" an adult burmese python. Go with a standard size, high quality hook. As the animal grows, you will lessen the amount of body the hook is used on. I use a standard (appx 3 3/4" gap) hook for my adult burm. It is mainly used in the neck area nad simply gives him direction. I also touch him with it when I enter his cage. (Again, only if there is no food coming) These are not bright animals, but they do get used to patterns.

I personally use the hook method and its been a big help. I wouldn't tap on the head though, I would just rub it down its body then pick him up with some thick gloves.
