In May '04 we had the opportunity to visit a couple of timber dens - here are some photos & comments.

Location A yielded 25 animals in about 3 hours of hunting. This trip we expanded our search to include some lower elevations (400 ft-ish) that we hadn't checked before & found animals lighter in coloration than we were used to seeing at this location.

At Location B, we encountered 32 horridus in approximately 2 hours, and the whole situation was kind of surreal. There were so many snakes out among the rocks that one really had to be careful of hand & foot placement while climbing. We also found many of them later in the day - after 5 p.m., which was later than we'd seen them on earlier trips at any location.

57 in one day...not too shabby, huh? :)

Here's something we'd heard of, but not seen before - have any of
you seen horridus in a tree?

This is an animal we found missing an eye, but still extremely
lively & alert:

Wow! Def. one of the most beautiful Rattlers out there! Keep up the good work in the conservation area, they sure do need all the friends they can get.

Never seen it , but I have never even seen a Timber in real life! I think there was a note in the last Herpetological Review about arboreal activity in horridus

I was wrong, it wasn't last month (at least from what I found).

Those dark Timbers are AMAZING looking! Much different than the blacktails we see here. The lighter color ones pictured here come closer to our natives, but with slightly smaller heads. I need to get Josh and our cameras out to the palmetto groves and valley cliffs to try to offer some shots for reference.

Great find as always. I'm still amazed at the prospect of blacktails up there. Wow.

Hey,
Wow Kara, those pic's are breath-taking to say the least. I'll have to find some of my earlier Timber pic's and post them. Arboreal Tim's! I've not heard of it before tonight. Thanks for the treat and great photographs.
