Hi I was wondering if anyone can help, I have a IJ carpet python that has a swollen eye socket. The eye its self looks fine but the skin under the scales between them and the eye is puffy. Im having a problem with mites also right now and am waiting on some PAM, could this be due to eggs or mites that crawled between the skin and the eye? I took her to the vet yesterday but i dont think hes too up on Herps (asked me if it was a burmese). Anyways he said he didnt know what it was and said to wait till the next shed to see what happens. Ill try to get a decent camera for a pic, my cell phone camera doesnt get close enough. Also does any one know of any good snake vets up in Marquette Michigan.

That is exactly what it is. Mites have infested the area between the eye and the socket. Good news though, those particular buggars are easy to get rid of. Go to the store and buy mineral oil (pure mineral oil, not baby oil, or anything with extra ingredience), put one to two drops on each eye for a couple of days. Kills the mites almost instantly. I have read that liquid tears works as well, but not as fast, and not as effeciently. With liquid tears it could take a week or two, with the mineral oil, it will usually kill them over night (but not the eggs). Good luck!
