I just got a worried email from a friend of mine who is afraid that her boa got bit by a spider.

She said she came home from school and went to check on him, and his face was kind of swollen. Then she went back to check on him and his eyes had whited over, his face was extremely swollen, and there is what appears to be a bite mark near his mouth. She says he has been soaking his head almost constantly. As she lives in the middle of nowhere, there isn't any way she can get him to the vet on such short notice before christmas.

Has anybody delt with this before? I've never heard of it happening, so I really have no clue what to tell her...

ive never heard of it either but i do know a thing or two about arachnids and their venom.... assuming that she lives in the us, she shouldnt have anything to worry about (i hope) from a spider unless it is a brown recluse or black widow..... a spiders venom is designed to kill smaller animals and not large.... it is highly necrotic as all spiders have a hemotoxic venom to help them digest their food which would explain the swelling..... my concern is that it is on the face... i dont know what to tell you about the eyes.... if she cant get it to vet then all she can do is wait.... if it is still alive after two days it should be fine
