Hi,
I'm new to the site and have been looking around for how to setup a snake tub for a ball python. I'm going to use a rubbermaid clear storage bin. I'm just wondering do I need a light or undertank heat pad, if so do I need to cut out a hole for the light or what. If you have any pics that would be great or instructions. I just want to get this right before I get my ball python. Thanks for any replies.

I had this problem when i first started and I couldnt get an answer out of anyone, but now i know so I'll answer your question. When usuing a plastic container you cant really use light as they will usually melt the container. You will have to use a UTH or a product called Flexwatt. You will have to hook up whichever one you choose to a thermostat and use a thermometer with a probe to calibrate the heat source. Make sure that the probe is under the substrate directly in contact with the plastic is on the outside of. Make sure that you have sufficient holes in the container so that the humidity is not to high.(to high is when you can see water droplets forming on the inside of the container. You should also get a humidity gauge to measure humidity levels. Ideal is between 50% and 60%) And also make sure that you heat source is on the outside of the container and not the inside as some people will mistakenly do.

You can use a small(18") fluorescent light placed on the side next to the tub for light if you want it, but just the ambient room light is fine.

There's a search feature in the top navbar that yields some pretty nifty results, like this post (http://www.newenglandreptile.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7379&postcount=11).
