when my snakes had mites I noticed that there was a lot of them in the water bowl. then when I looked closer I saw some on my snakes but not as many as on and around the water bowl

They are very small. If you watch near the eyes and mouth you will see them moving around. Especially near the eyes!

Best mite lesson I got...If you see a black dot, you wipe it with your finger. If it smears, leaving a thin streak of blood in your trail, you found a mite!! Also look for some white-ish residue on your snake (mite droppings). And keep in mind the mite eggs take a week to hatch, so you don't just spray the animal and it's enclosure once and forget about it.

If you have what looks like poppy seeds in the water, you've got mites. Sanitize the enclosure. There are commercial treatments, but my herp vet recommended a warm water bath, since mites can't swim. If you have other snakes, you may want to treat them, just as a preventative.

Depending on the age of the mites, they can be VERY difficult to see. The adult mites are much easier to spot, but can be easily overlooked as a pattern.
