Doctors:

(A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.

(B) Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year are 120,000.

(C) Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171.

Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept. of Health Human Services.

Guns:

(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000. Yes, that is
80 million.

(B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is
1,500.

(C) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is 0.0000188.

Conclusion:

Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous
than gun owners.

What To Do:

(A) Remember: "Guns don't kill people, doctors do."

(B) Worry: Not everyone has a gun, but almost everyone has at least
one doctor.

(C) Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban
doctors before this gets completely out of hand. (Out of concern for
the public at large, the statistics on lawyers are withheld for fear
the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention.)

I'm sure their definition of "accidental" has a big effect on that survey. Sounds like it means if there is any way that the patient could be "saved" then it is a mistake on the doctors part. You have to remember there are alot of risks associated with surgery and other things, and I bet in most cases these "accidental" deaths were caused by a doctor attempting to save a patients life. Also curious to see how many of those were actually filed as mal practice. Our health care system isn't perfect but if we keep daggering and suing doctors there won't be anyone to care for us when we get old. I have a few elderly relatives that cannot recieve hardly any hospital treatment in their area because all the doctors have quit practicing or moved to a location where they make enough money to pay for insurance.. I worry about them alot

I know a guy who shot himself with a 6' harpoon. Yeah, we were in his garage and he was showing this thing off. While he was waving the thing around it went off. The spear ricocheted off of the floor, then the garage door, then the roof and finally landed in his thigh. It wasn't funny at the time but now when I think back I can't help but laugh. Nobody moved, they just watched the spear do a full circle.

Just goes to show what statistics can do for ya!!!

I know an alarming number of people who want to be doctors, but have decided to enter another area of the medical field because they don't want to have to worry about lawsuits and carrying exorbitant amounts of malpractice insurance. It's definitely scary. Maybe now lawyers should be required to learn to practice medicine -- I hear there are more kids in law school today than there are lawyers on the planet.

Sounds like he was a few inches away from a Darwin award.
