I was not sure where to post this, but here goes. Does anyone here keep hot snakes? If so what species? What is the best way to get into keeping hot snakes? If I can start keeping them would a mangrove snake be a good first choice or would you recommend another species? I know I will have to get very good at using hook and tongs first. Any more info you can give would be great.

I was reading an article (I can't remember where) where this guy liked to use colubrids, such as rat snakes and racers to teach his students proper technique. He felt that those snakes have more of a tendency to strike than most hots; and if you can get good at handling them without getting hit, you would be well on your way to safely handling the venomous. Sorry that this doesn't really answer your question.

Dude I'm not a cop. I am a truck driver. I drive for Andy Oxy in Asheville, NC and deliver flammable, non flammable and medical gasses. I am just interested in starting with hot snakes. I go to WNC Aquarium in Asheville NC for all my feeders and supplies and have had several in depth conversations with the owner about hot snakes. I think I'm going to start with a southern copper because the local hospital has the anti venom and I have read that there are no medical records of a southern ever killing an adult. Please don't make assumptions like that. Its not really fair to me to do that. Not cool man.

Why? It's not illegal to own hots.

That depends on the state you live in. CA is a no go for hots.

Training with someone that has venomous snakes is where any beginner needs to start. Spending time talking with an experienced keeper is your first step. Books are great but experience teaches.
Each venomous snake species has its own characteristics and within each species the individual can and will surprise.
