I really like Forest Floor bedding as well. Especially if you are going for a natural look. It holds humidity really well when you need it to but also dries out just fine.
It's certainly not as cheap as, say, bulk aspen. However, it's not so expensive that doing a good spot scoop or total substrate change will break your bank.

I used to use towels and they worked fine just throw them in the wash...

I use Cypress mulch on my ball, and burmese. It helps keep humidity and easy to spot clean.. I change it out about every month fully.

I bought speaker box carpet for my BP's 4X2X2 enclosure which sits in our living room. I have glass on 3 sides so it's a little easier on the eyes than newspaper. I have a couple sheets so when one is dirty I hang it up on the mat rack at the car wash and clean it up while washing my truck. I haven't had any ill effects from using it.

i use cypress as well
its easy to tell when the humidity will get low
before it actually drops

I like newspaper, it seems to be the easiest and appears to be sanitary. It just doesn't seem to stay flat too often, the snakes ball it up and move it all over the place.
