Has anyone been to the Purgatory Chasm in MA to look for Timbers. I was there a few years ago and we found several..The area is supposed to be protected (signs everywhere) due to possible den sites.
Just wondering

Late Summer (August)
There were 2 black and one yellow patterned. There are several rock outcroppings, but we saw them come where the rocks came together and formed kind of a cave. Someone had left a large stick which could be climbed down. We shined a flashlight down and bingo. I want to say the town was either Hadley or Hamilton--do these sound familiar??

Very cool in the summer they can be hard to find..... in a cave no less....
You are lucky to just find them, had you heard rumors of them there?
Goto topozone.com and look for the place.....it makes lots of sense once you get your bearings of an area. I will go check and see what I can find...
That might be in Hadley....
Thanks kev..I will check with a friend to see if that makes sense, he knows mass...
I did not even read your post JASON!!! Almost missed it..i will check that out, sutton!

yeah.... looks like a big hiker spot... but maybe there are some "out of bounds" places to wander.

Jason--That is the exact spot!! I was with a summer camp staff trip and we were not looking for snakes, just a place to drink. I couldn't find the place again if I tried, I wasn't driving. It was a hiking trail and had signs saying no vertical climbing on all the rock surfaces.

Purgatory Chasm I kniow for a fact to be heavily hiked especially in the spring/summer months. It looks nice but, a place with kids playing all over the rocks doesnt seem promising.

Kev.
Purgatory Chasm is heavily hiked......heavily. Does have some nice rock outcrops but, thats what draws people out there. I think if there was a population otu there their incident of coming into contact with humans would be high. But, then again Im looking into an the Monadnock area which contains the second most hike Mtn in the world. so Im really not in aposition to judge anywhere

Kev,
Sorry I've been on the other forums and haven't responded to your post. He can pm or email me. The timbers were in the somewhere in the chasm where a couple of rocks make like a cave in the ground.

It was small and in the groundm like a group of rocks surrounding an opening of maybe 4 feet in diameter
