Argus monitors
are wonderful varanids that display a great deal of intelligence.
They make excellent captives due to their smaller adult size (40")
and comparitively mild dispositions. Argus may appear aggressive,
but this is more "bark than bite" so to speak; they
typically huff and puff and often inflate themselves to look big
and bad, but become tractable with gentle, consistent handling.
Another positive aspect of the Argus is incredible hardiness:
they are durable, disease resistant and typically voracious feeders.
Our breeder adults often exhibit the classic Argus behavior of
"tripoding" - standing on hind legs & balancing
on tail. This action allows the monitor to get a better look at
its surroundings and probably works well in the wild when scanning
the landscape for possible threats or food.
We have a
large colony of breeding adults and offer extremely healthy, thriving
CB babies throughout the year.
