Water Monitor

(Varanus salvator)

Meet the "labrador retriever" of the monitor family: a big, water-loving lizard that typically becomes extremely tame when gently handled from the time they are hatchlings. We feel that water monitors are the #1 big pet monitor in regards to personality and a rewarding experience for the amount of husbandry involved. Our largest is a 7' male named Poseidon who hangs out in a tub of water on the front lawn during the summer, and is the star of our educational programs. The Malaysian water monitor colony at NERD consists of 4.8 adults, including the beautiful T+ Albino and Sulpher color morphs.

Water monitors do require commitment - adults need an enclosure of 6' (L) x 3' (W) x 4' (min. H) to really thrive; more vertical space is always better - these varanids are adept climbers and will utilize branches and logs placed within the enclosure. UV light & large water tubs are also necessities for this species; all care aspects should be seriously considered before purchasing a water monitor. The keeper who has time and space to dedicate to this species is usually rewarded with a large, docile, intelligent monitor that is a joy to interact with.

We make immaculate, perfectly started juvenile water monitors available throughout the year; please contact us for availability & reserve early if interested - these babies go FAST!!!
