Just as they are, a Tokay Gecko is an incredible animal to look at. The natural blue, orange, red, and gray pigmentation is incredible to say the least and it is a wonder more people do not keep them. The down side is their general rugged demeanor; tokays are known for their incredible bite and defensive attitude. There are two types of bites you can get from one of these guys: the warning bite with the combined bark, and the eyes-sinking-into-its-head “Oh My God, get it off me!” bite. The first type is generally intended just to get you to leave the gecko alone. The second “take no prisoners” bite occurs you grasp one of these animals and it feels like you’re trying to attack it. It will latch onto your hand and clamp down, and any efforts to remove the gecko only makes the situation worse! This kind of bite is shockingly painful from a relatively small animal, and not something you want to happen ever again! Should you experience this, put the animal down onto a surface where it feels that it can run away, stop moving, and wait for your tokay to let go.  Don't try to force the jaws apart - this can hurt the tokay & is only going to provoke it to bite harder.

Restraining tokays can be a bit tricky and it is best to leave them alone if you are afraid of being bit. Captive ones can be tamed and are wonderful once they have learned that the giant monster that wants to hold it is not going to eat it! You have to establish trust, grabbing them behind the head is not going to accomplish this. To tame one it takes time and patience, small positive episodes with your lizard is the trick. Once tame, they will climb right onto your hand and lick you just like a leopard gecko! I regard this lizard as a reticulated python in gecko's body, once understood they are great to keep!
